Comparison

Reach + Within and SimplePractice

A factual comparison for UK practices, written in October 2026 from SimplePractice’s public pages. No fee table on this page.

Checked October 2026.

This comparison was written in October 2026 for UK therapists and counsellors who have SimplePractice on a shortlist. It uses SimplePractice’s own public pages: the product homepage, the description of practice software on their site, and support articles on HIPAA and on whether a public API exists. It does not copy their logo. It does not repeat a fee. Read their pricing page yourself, and read ours, before you buy.

SimplePractice is practice software used widely by therapists, especially in the United States: scheduling, clinical notes, telehealth, a client portal and insurance billing, as they describe the product. Reach + Within is practice software for therapists, group practices, and rehabs and treatment centres. In the United Kingdom the therapist product is Reach plus Within: enquiries and invoices on one side, the clinical file on the other.

What SimplePractice describes

On the pages we read, SimplePractice presents an electronic record for health and wellness professionals. Therapists are a named audience. The public description of practice software includes appointment scheduling and reminders, billing, insurance claim filing, a client portal with secure messaging, note templates, and telehealth that they describe as meeting US health-privacy rules.

A support article on staying HIPAA compliant says the service is HIPAA compliant and that data is hosted by a provider set up for healthcare organisations meeting HIPAA and HITRUST requirements. A separate support article on agreements says the service is HIPAA compliant and HITRUST certified. Those are United States frameworks. They are not a UK GDPR certification and they are not a POPIA certification. We do not treat them as either. The hosting article we read did not name a country. If you are a UK practice, ask where the client record would sit and which transfer terms would apply to you. Do not assume the answer from a HIPAA badge.

The same HIPAA article describes what happens to identifiable data after an account ends, and it tells the practice to export before cancelling because retention duties stay with the practice. That is a fair warning from them, and it is the same kind of warning we give: export while you still can, and do not treat a software company as the owner of your retention period.

A support article on plans, read in October 2026, said SimplePractice did not offer a public API for integrations. If a link to another system is the reason you are buying, check that article again. We do not claim a public API either, and we do not claim live accounting or two-way calendar sync.

Their homepage has published a large figure for practitioners and clients on the platform. We have not audited it. A large installed base is a real reason some practices choose a product. It is not, by itself, evidence that the product fits UK GDPR or a counselling week in Britain.

What we publish for a UK counselling practice

Reach holds enquiries, onboarding, bookings and invoicing. Within holds the clinical file: assessments, treatment plans and session notes. The enquiry opens the file, so the client is not typed twice. A PA can book and bill and cannot open the note, even with a direct link. Where the client has agreed, Assist drafts a note from the recording. The counsellor reviews, edits and signs. Assist does not diagnose and it does not sign.

Outcome scales include PHQ-9, GAD-7 and AUDIT, completed by secure link and charted on the file. The public calculators on this website are separate: they are a screening tool, not a diagnosis, and they store nothing.

Client data is hosted in the EU (Netherlands). We do not claim a certification. The practice remains responsible for its notice, its lawful basis and its retention period. The practical notes are EU hosting and UK GDPR and GDPR and therapy notes.

We do not sell US insurance claim filing on this page. A UK counsellor who invoices the client is the workflow we are describing. Rehabs and treatment centres are not on the therapist product. They request a quote, because admissions, nursing and family reports are a different shape of work.

The trial is 30 days, with demo clients, and no card. SimplePractice invites a trial from its own site. Use both, with fictional clients, before you move a record.

Where SimplePractice is the better fit

Choose SimplePractice if your practice bills US insurers and you want claim filing, eligibility checks and the billing tools they describe as part of the product. Choose it if you want a client portal with secure messaging and telehealth that a large number of US therapists already know how to use. Choose it if HIPAA and HITRUST are the security frame your contracts ask for, and if you have taken advice on what that means for a client in the United Kingdom.

Choose it if your notes, your diary and your invoices already match the way a US therapy EHR is arranged, and you do not need a separate enquiry pipeline or a rule that admin staff cannot open the note. A practice that is happy on SimplePractice, and whose clients and contracts sit in that system, has a good reason to stay. Moving for the sake of a new logo is a poor reason.

Where Reach + Within is the better fit

Choose Reach + Within if you are a UK counsellor, therapist or group practice and the problem is the gap between the first enquiry, the signed note and the invoice. Choose it if you will test, on day one, that the person who bills cannot read the session. Choose it if you want the hosting location stated as the EU (Netherlands), and a processor relationship you can explain under UK GDPR, rather than a US health-privacy badge you still have to translate into a transfer decision.

Choose it if you may grow into residential or outpatient treatment and you want that work quoted as a treatment-centre record, including nursing and an inspection pack, rather than a clinic diary asked to behave like a ward. That path is rehab software. It is not a reason for a solo counsellor to buy features they will not use. A solo counsellor uses the same system and leaves the ward features alone.

How to decide

Put the two products next to a real week, not next to a feature grid. Book one fictional client. Write one note. Raise one invoice. Export the file. Ask SimplePractice where a UK record is hosted and what happens to it when you leave. Ask us the same questions, and read security. If either trial needs a second product for a step you do every day, write that down.

Other UK comparisons are WriteUpp, Cliniko, Zanda and Carepatron. The buying checklist is how to choose practice software. The 2026 roundup is best practice management software for therapists in the UK. Counsellors who searched for the category, rather than for one brand, can start at counselling software.

Comparison questions

Is SimplePractice built around UK GDPR?

Their public security articles describe HIPAA and HITRUST, which are United States frameworks. They did not, in the text we read, describe UK GDPR. Ask them where a UK record is hosted.

Does Reach + Within file US insurance claims?

No. This comparison is for a UK practice that invoices the client. US claim filing is part of how SimplePractice describes its own product.

When is SimplePractice the better fit?

When you bill US insurers, want their client portal and telehealth, and you have taken advice on what their US security frame means for your clients.
